Anorexia is often treated with the use of one or more medications. There is no one medication that will cure the disease, but there are several that have been found to help reduce the thought and mood problems that contribute to anorexia. A doctor who specializes in treating eating disorders will have the experience needed to treat anorexia with medication.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with an antidepressant medication. These can help elevate the mood enough that the anorexia patient may be less resistant to treatment. Some of the medications that are often used are Prozac, **** and Wellbutrin.

  2. Step 2

Use another medication to deal with the obsessive thoughts that can contribute to the anorexia. Some of the medications used to treat obsessive thoughts or obsessive compulsive disorder are Luvox and Zoloft.

  3. Step 3

Change to a different medication if one is not working to control the symptoms it should be controlling. There may be several medication changes necessary to find the best combination to treat each anorexia patient. The patient should continue in her therapy sessions so that the doctor can evaluate how well each medication is working. Take therapy or cognitive behavior therapy alongside the medications for the best chance of treating the illness.

  4. Step 4

Stay on the prescribed medication. Once the proper medication or combination of medications is found, the patient will likely have to stay on them for a long period of time. Even if the anorexia gets better, stopping the medication could lead to a relapse. Medications for mood and thought disorders often need to be taken for years.
