Vistaril, also known as Hydroxyzine, is a medication used to control anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis. Studies show a low incidence of addiction to Vistaril, making it a popular choice among doctors. It works quickly, so effects of the drug appear within 15 to 30 minutes, allowing fast, temporary relief from stress and anxiety associated with OCD.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Visit your doctor to discuss treatment using Vistaril. Inform him of drugs you are currently taking to avoid possible interactions. Since it's available by prescription only, use Vistaril under a doctor's care.
Step2
Take medication as directed, generally 50 to 100 mg up to four times daily. Be sure to continue using any other medications that your doctor prescribes.
Step3
Report side effects that are severe or don't go away. Side effects that have been associated with Vistaril include drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, tremors and convulsions.
Step4
Follow up with your doctor so that she may monitor your progress and effectiveness of the medication. Vistaril may no longer be effective after four months so it's intended for short-term use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use Vistaril during pregnancy or while nursing since excretion through breast milk is unknown.
  • Never drive or operate dangerous machinery until you're sure how Vistaril will affect you as drowsiness may occur. Refrain from using alcohol or sedatives while taking this medication.
  • Take extra caution when used by the elderly. Drugs of this type may cause confusion and over sedation, so begin with a low dose and close observation.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience difficulty breathing, muscle weakness or increased anxiety.
  • Never take more than the recommended dose of Vistaril.
