How to Do the Wing T Offense in Football

The Wing T offense is an excellent offensive philosophy for high school and smaller college programs due to its relative novelty and its reliance upon misdirection and deception to trick the opposing defense. If you have a team with an intelligent backfield and a disciplined offensive line, the Wing T offense is a sound choice to build your offensive playbook around.

Instructions

    • 1

Line your five down linemen and a tight end at the line of scrimmage. You can utilize a second tight end, or use a dedicated wide receiver on the weak side to open more options for your passing game.

    • 2

Set your quarterback directly behind the center, your fullback two yards behind the quarterback, and your halfback two yards behind your strong side guard.

    • 3

Position your wingback one yard off, and one yard behind, the weak side tackle. If you are employing two tight ends in your formation, position your wingback one yard off, and one yard behind, the tight end on the opposite side of your halfback. Your offense is now in the Wing T formation.

    • 4

Utilize misdirection plays, such as counters and reverses, to take advantage of the options that the wingback provides your offense.

    • 5

Practice ball exchanges between your quarterback and the rest of your backfield, including the wingback. Many plays in the Wing T offense are reliant upon multiple fake handoffs, and you will want to practice these exchanges to avoid fumbles and miscommunication.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't call plays during a game unless you are positive your entire team understands exactly what they are doing in the play being called. The Wing T offense has a higher risk-reward than most other offensive philosophies, and relies upon all team members operating in a precise, coordinated manner.
