Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner the same day you will be cutting it. Dry it completely as you normally would, but do not put any products into it.

    • 2

Gather the tools you'll need. This includes a fine tooth comb, sharp scissors designed for cutting hair, and 2 mirrors, one that can be held with your hand to see the back of your head. Clean a space where you have room to move. Plan to cut the hair on tile that can be easily swept up after, or put down a towel that hair can fall onto.

    • 3

Comb hair thoroughly so that there are no knots. Plan out what style you will be cutting into your hair. Decide how much you want to take off the length.

    • 4

Bend at the waist and flip your hair over your head. Make a straight cut horizontally across; cut less than the amount you want to cut off so you have room to make corrections if needed. Continue until all the hair has been cut to the same length.

    • 5

Flip your head back up and check the evenness of the length. Make adjustments as needed. Cut layers to frame your face if desired by taking the scissors at a downward angle with the shears toward the floor.

    • 6

Check to be sure your hair is falling the way you want it to. With long hair, it is easy to have a style that can lay in more than one way for variety. Also check that it looks the way you would like when pulled back.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut enough off the length so it remains long, but all split ends have been removed.
