Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Polystyrene crown molding
  • Table saw
  • Safety goggles
  • Adhesive caulk
  • Caulking gun
  • Acrylic painter's caulk
  • Clean cloths
  • Painter's tape (optional)
  • Miter box and saw (optional)
  1. Step 1

Gather all of your materials before beginning. Make sure to buy more crown molding than your measurements say you will need to account for any mistakes in cutting. Start in one corner of your room.

  2. Step 2

Cut a 45-degree miter on one end of a strip of molding with your table saw. Even out the factory cut on the other end of the strip.

  3. Step 3

Place strips of the adhesive caulk on the back of the trim. The strips should be several inches long. Leave about 6 inches between the strips. Press the section of crown molding onto the wall just beneath the ceiling.

  4. Step 4

Add a mitered edge when you reach the corner at the end of the first wall. Measure the next piece of molding against the mitered corner and mark the line with a pencil. Nibble at the trim with your table saw, moving the blade closer to the line until the piece is the right length.

  5. Step 5

Continue Steps 2 through 4 around the room.

  6. Step 6

Apply acrylic painter's caulk to the joint at the top and bottom of the crown molding. Use the caulk to fill in any gaps between pieces of trim. Wipe away any excess with a clean cloth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use painter's tape while your caulk is drying to ensure the molding stays in the right position. Remove the tape after a few hours.
  • Purchase an inexpensive miter box and saw to achieve perfect mitered corners easily.
