How to Write an After-Dinner Speech for a Competition

You've been invited to a dinner celebrating your sporting event and have been asked to give a speech. An honor for sure. You definitely want to give a good speech that suits the occasion. Use these tips to write an after-dinner address for a competition.

Instructions

    • 1

Thank all the people who helped you win directly or indirectly. Thank anyone who was a positive influence during your competition.

    • 2

Sum up your sport and what it means to you. Tell how you got involved in the competition and how you won.

    • 3

Explain how you persevered when things were tough. Use a story that your listeners can relate to when talking about yourself. Talk about any lessons you learned on your way to winning your competition.

    • 4

Add jokes or pieces of humor to your speech after you have the bulk of the speech done. You want a good speech with a touch of humor to lighten things up. Tell a funny story about something that happened to you while you were playing the sport or winning the competition.

    • 5

Practice your speech on a friend to make sure it all makes sense. Time yourself to make sure the speech isn't too long. Say everything out loud in the same tone and speed you plan to use.

    • 6

End you speech on a positive note so people feel good about what you have said. You want your words to be remembered in a positive way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write your speech from your heart so you it will be sincere.

  • Make a toast to your sponsors.

  • Don't use questionable jokes that could offend anyone.
