Although, most people's primary exposure to cheerleaders is through pep rallies and football game, cheerleading is sport with competitions at many levels, like any other sport. For most cheerleaders, the goal is the reach Nationals and win a national cheerleader championship competition. Here's how to qualify.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Review the competition schedule for your league or leagues. The Universal Cheerleader Association and National Cheerleaders Association are a couple of the associations available. Cheerleader and dance teams are allowed to compete in more than one National Championship if they qualify. Competing in more than one is advantageous because it builds character in the girls competing.

  2. Step 2

Perform your best at the local, regional and state competitions. Only the top two to three teams at the local level are invited to move on and compete at the Regionals. Then the top two to three teams at Regionals then move on to compete at Nationals.

  3. Step 3

Practice your routines to be sure they are within the guidelines. Judges deduct points for uniform violations, routines that are too long, or improper use of signs during the routine. Any questions about your routine's compliance must be handled by the coach prior Nationals and by contacting the competition director.

  4. Step 4

Enter as many competitions as possible to practice performing in a competitive setting. Enter competitions that are not counted toward qualifying for Nationals, so the team receives feedback on the perform it can incorporate into the routine before competing where it determines whether Nationals is an option.

  5. Step 5

Check what the fees are per cheerleader at each competition. Have all paperwork and fees turned in by the association's deadlines. Sometimes cheerleaders performing with more than one team are allowed a discount on registering for competitions.
