Step 1
Purchase a versatile steamer that can be used for meat, fish or vegetables. Consider stackable steamers for steaming multiple items at the same time. Get a collapsible steaming basket when space is a concern.
-
Step 2
Use a roasting pan for steaming large quantities of food. Pour an inch or so of water in the bottom of the roaster. Place two clean, empty tuna cans upside down in the bottom of the roaster and set the rack on top of them.
-
Step 3
Set the roasting pan over two burners on medium heat. Place a whole fish in the roaster. Add lemon wedges and fresh herbs like basil or rosemary to flavor the fish. Steam for 15 to 20 minutes.
-
Step 4
Convert a wok into a steamer by arranging two pairs of chopsticks in a crisscross pattern in the bottom of the pan. Pour water into the bottom of the wok. Add a glass baking dish with chops or tenderloin covered with a handful of fresh cilantro, lemongrass or ginger. Cover the wok and steam the meat to the desired doneness.
-
Step 5
Fill the bottom of a steaming basket with a thick layer of sliced onions, garlic cloves and fresh lemon. Add broccoli, asparagus or Brussels sprouts. Steam the vegetables until tender.
-
Step 6
Steam vegetables in the microwave. Add lemon and fresh tarragon to a half-cup of water in a plastic bowl. Add zucchini, yellow squash, cauliflower or carrots. Cover and steam in 60-second intervals until tender.
