One small downside of the small iPhone and iPod movies is the lack of a subtitle track. The files require that subtitles be part of the video track itself. Just about any commercial DVD to iPod ripper will burn one subtitle track onto your MP4 file, but what if you want to add subtitles to your own iPod videos? You can do it with the right software and patience.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Video to iPod conversion software
  • Subtitle Workshop software
  • VSFilter software
  1. Step 1

Load your video into Subtitle Workshop (see Resources). Choose "Open" from the Movie menu. Subtitle Workshop supports most major video formats.

  2. Step 2

Create a new subtitle file. Choose "New Subtitle" from the File menu. Subtitle Workshop saves the text in a separate file that you will need to merge with the movie later.

  3. Step 3

Add subtitles to the file by advancing the playback to where you want to insert each subtitle (usually the first word of a line of dialog). Pause the movie and click on the Set button to insert the start time and the subtitle text. Advance to the end of the dialog and pause to insert the stop time with the set button. The subtitle file will now have a record of the subtitle, when and how long to play it.

  4. Step 4

Save the file in SRT format so you can edit with a text editor if you need to. Use the exact name of the video file name and save the subtitle file in the same folder. Play back your movie in Subtitle Workshop to make sure the subtitles are precisely aligned. If any are off, you can tweak the time code numbers with a text-editing program.

  5. Step 5

Test the video with any standard video playback software. You will need to have VSFilter installed to see the subtitles (see Resources). If you don't see the subtitles, and you don't see a green arrow icon in the Windows Taskbar notification area, the filter wasn't installed properly.

  6. Step 6

Convert the movie to MP4 format with your DVD to iPod application. The application interfaces are standard and will prompt you to load the movie, choose the finished file location and select the movie settings. Save the file as an iPod file (MP4 with a 320 x 240 window) with subtitle transfer on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check that the DVD to iPod software supports subtitle transfer before you purchase it.
