A chimney starter is a device used to light charcoal without the use of lighter fluid or other toxic chemicals. It's normally a stainless-steel cylinder. If you're concerned about toxic fumes when you grill, you can start your charcoal fire with a chimney starter.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chimney starter
  • Charcoal
  • Match or lighter
  • Gloves
  1. Step 1

Turn the chimney upside down; take some newspaper sheets and form two donuts around the bottom of the chimney starter. Arrange the newspaper in a circle so there's a hole in the center. Hot air will rise through the center and light the coals faster.

  2. Step 2

Fill the chimney with charcoal after turning it right-side up. If you're concerned about toxic derivatives, look for a 100 percent natural charcoal, like Wicked Good or The Original Charcoal Company brand.

  3. Step 3

Light the newspaper at several points with a match. As the warm air rises, the flame will become a blazing furnace and light all the coals. Wait approximately 15 to 20 minutes for all the coals to light. There should be some gray ash on the surface.

  4. Step 4

Transfer the coals to your grill. Either pour the coals into your grill (wear heat-resistant gloves) or use tongs to transfer them. Remove the grate from the grill first.

  5. Step 5

Put the grate back on the grill and close the lid. Allow the grill enough time to heat up before you start cooking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Paper towels are an alternative to using newspaper. You can also use sawdust starters in place of newspaper.
  • Spray the newspaper with non-stick cooking spray after it's in the chimney to make it burn longer.
  • Don't touch the chimney immediately after removing the coals. It will remain hot for some time.
