Things You'll Need:
- Cushions (recommended)
-
Step 1
Arrange cushions on the floor so they'll be comfortable for you to sit on. You can also arrange some cushions behind you to help support your back. If you have trouble getting comfortable with the cushions on the floor, you can sit directly on the floor instead.
-
Step 2
Cross your legs in front of you. They should be crossed so that the right leg is somewhat elevated off the floor instead of in the typical cross-legged position.
-
Step 3
Rest the sitar on your right thigh. Keep plenty of room between the neck of the instrument and your chest. You need to be able to see the back of the sitar neck so you can use it to locate the notes on the front of the instrument.
-
Step 4
Put your right thumb in the joint between the neck and gourd of the sitar. This will keep your hand in the proper position to pick the strings. Rest your elbow on the gourd to help support your arm and prevent unnecessary strain on your thumb.
-
Step 5
Hang your hand and wrist down in front of the gourd in a position that will be comfortable for you to pick the strings.
