Verify that you are running the latest version of Mozilla Thunderbird. Updated releases of Firefox usually have fixes to common bugs experienced by users. If you aren't using the latest version, download it into an empty folder to avoid conflicts.

Make a new profile in the program. Switch to the new profile and keep all of the default options. Use the new profile and determine that the bug persists.

Add preferences, options, extensions and the personal modifications you use in your normal profile to the new profile one at a time. After adding each modification, test the program to see if the bug arises. Doing this helps you determine what modification brings out the bug in the program. Find the bug conflicting with one of your modifications.

Figure out if the bug arises as s conflict with Thunderbird, Mozilla or Core. All are components of the Mozilla Thunderbird email program. If you need help determining what parts belong to Thunderbird, Mozilla and Core, consult Mozilla's documentation.

Determine if your bug has already been filed by a previous user. Refer to Mozilla's Bugzilla for a list of previously filed bugs.

Read Mozilla's guidelines on bug report filing. The guidelines help you clarify your bug problem and aid developers when attempting to fix a bug.

Create an account on Bugzilla and follow the guided windows. Each window separates information and eases the bug-filing process. Include all requested bug details. Be sure to mention the results of the above steps in your report.
