With the addition of the FreePOPs download, Thunderbird accesses your Hotmail email with no trouble. FreePOPs is a free download web email access tool that accesses your Hotmail email through the POP email protocol. This application connects your Hotmail account with the Mozilla Thunderbird email program so you can access and read Hotmail through Thunderbird.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install and run FreePOPs (see Resources, below). This gives you access to the POP3 protocol.

  2. Step 2

Open the Mozilla Thunderbird email program. Click Tools in the Thunderbird Options menu. Select Account Settings from the drop-down menu.

  3. Step 3

Choose Add Account and designate Email Account as the type of account to add to Thunderbird. Click Continue.

  4. Step 4

Enter your name in the Your Name field. Plug in your Hotmail address in the Email Address field and click Continue.

  5. Step 5

Select POP in the Select the Type of Incoming Server You Are Using field. Type "localhost" in the Incoming Server field.

  6. Step 6

Designate your Hotmail account to use a separate inbox or for it to appear in Local Folders. Click Continue.

  7. Step 7

Type your Hotmail address in the Incoming User Name field and click Continue. Click Done.

  8. Step 8

Go to Server Settings in the account named after your Hotmail address. Type "2000" in the Port field.
