Embrace an expandable room addition when you find yourself needing the extra space of a family room. Modular rooms, built off-site, fulfill the needs of a growing family. Add an extra room for more space and to help guests avoid stepping over toys in the living room when they visit.

From Quick Guide: Home Additions
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider where to build the new family room. Ideally, if you have a double-wide mobile home, add the family room at the back.

  2. Step 2

Allow the family room to form an L shape. Position the family room so a door comes out of a major existing room.

  3. Step 3

Use the existing back door if you have one coming from somewhere other than the laundry room. If there is a deck in that area, you must remove it because the room addition will conflict with it.

  4. Step 4

Locate a company in your area that builds modular room additions. They will attach the new room to your mobile home as part of the setup. Discuss and itemize setup charges with your sales representative.

  5. Step 5

Document all measurements, including roof line and foundation. Ensure the family room attachment is seamless by supervising the installation process and knowing beforehand what it is going to entail. Pay particular attention to avoid water seepage in both areas.

  6. Step 6

Rebuild the deck off the new family room, making any changes you need in the new location.

Tips & Warnings
  • The easiest way to add a family room to a mobile home is to use a modular room addition built by a company that specializes in such structures.
  • Be sure to check out zoning requirements in your area. However, you should be okay if you live in the country.
