Pole barns have been a part of the American landscapes for many years. Pole barns are versatile and house everything from farm equipment to live stock. With a variety of sizes to meet any needs, most pole barns kits come with pre-bored holes. When constructing a pole barn from scratch, use a heavy duty auger to dig the right size hole.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a permit for your structure from your city or municipality. Check all specification requirements for hole depth and frost line.

  2. Step 2

Rent a heavy duty garden auger from a local home supply store or tool rental.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a post hole digger and narrow tipped shovels for hand work.

  4. Step 4

Mark the corners where the posts for the pole barn will sit. Make sure the poles form ninety degree angles for the corners of the building.

  5. Step 5

Begin your post hole with the narrow edged shovels. Start each hole to a depth of 3 to 4 inches, clearing away any loose gravel, rocks or vines as you go.

  6. Step 6

Insert the auger into the hole and begin excavating the hole. Take your time as the auger may hang on roots below the ground or stop suddenly from contact with a rock.

  7. Step 7

Use the post hole digger and shovels to remove any rocks or roots that jam the auger. Continue to drill and dig to the required depth for your pole barn posts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use caution when working with a power garden auger. The auger can easily jam on rocks or roots beneath the surface and throw you to the ground. Wear proper eye and ear protection and read all instructions carefully before beginning your project.
