If you have a boat that you use infrequently during the sailing season, you may be able to turn it into a source of income with a time-sharing program. Turning your sailboat into a timeshare will allow you to pay for the boat's expenses while still being able to use it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand what turning your sailboat into a timeshare will involve. It will mean sharing your boat with strangers. While people are responsible for keeping the boat in good condition, there is always the possibility of an accident happening while you are not there. Moreover, the extra use the boat will be getting will mean extra wear and tear on it, and periods of time when you will not be able to use your own boat.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want to manage the time-sharing program yourself, or if you want to have an agency take care of it. Managing the time-sharing program yourself will mean that you will get the entire revenue yourself. It also means that you will be responsible for paying for and organizing all the various aspects of time sharing, such as insurance, maintenance costs or docking fees. You will have to collect payment, find and select time sharers, and help to provide them with anything they might need.

  3. Step 3

Configure your sailboat for time sharing. This will mean working out any little idiosyncrasies in the boat's system that, while you may be familiar with them, will give trouble to new users. You may also want to upgrade the boat's navigation, cooking or water-making systems in order to give a more pleasant experience for the average sailor.

  4. Step 4

Move your sailboat to a suitable location. The location of your sailboat will contribute to how desirable it is for a time-sharing program. Certain cruising grounds are more popular than others. A boat located in Southern Florida will have access to the Caribbean, for example. The further South your boat is, the longer of a sailing season it will have. Of course, costs can be higher in certain regions. You'll also want a marina that is easy to access and that has good facilities.

  5. Step 5

Enroll your yacht in a time-sharing program. This will either be one that you've set up yourself or one provided through an agency. You can find numerous time-sharing agencies on the Internet that offer a wide variety of services. Here you will decide the prices and organize how the time-sharing program will work.
