How to Ship Cargo by Freighter
The least expensive way to ship cargo is by ocean freighter, but arranging to have the cargo taken to the port, loaded onto a ship and delivered to the destination is a complex process. Many shippers choose to work with an ocean transportation intermediary (OTI) to accomplish this task.

1
Inventory the goods you want to transport. Cargo vessels require inventories of all containers, and you'll want an inventory in order to insure your shipment. You cannot transport live plants or animals or perishable goods such as food.
-
2
Pack your shipment in a container that can be loaded aboard a cargo vessel. This can be a box, wooden crate, pallet or metal shipping container, but only use a shipping container if you have enough cargo to fill it.

Contact an OTI who will find a vessel that can transport your cargo. The exact dimensions and weight of your cargo aren't necessary in order to get a price quote and begin the shipping process. However, the dimensions and weight will be measured at the port, and your costs will be adjusted accordingly.

Follow the instructions of the OTI regarding when and where to deliver your cargo at the departure port, and when and where to pick it up once it reaches the destination. The OTI will provide you with the information and forms you need.

Tips & Warnings
You will save money if you can deliver your cargo to the departure port yourself. However, if this isn't possible, the OTI can arrange to pick up your cargo at your home or business. It will cost extra to have your cargo picked up at the destination port and delivered to the recipient.
You can find OTIs in the telephone directory, by calling and asking for information at the port or online by searching for ocean transportation intermediary.
You can track your shipment online or by checking with the port for the status and location of the ship your cargo is on.
New clients will be required to pay a hefty security deposit covering most of the transportation costs before shipping cargo.
Although most cargo is shipped and delivered on time, delays sometimes occur; therefore only an estimated arrival date is given, and you must check with the port for updates.
