Notary Publics are commissioned by their state to witness the signing of important documents. This service is typically performed in the Notary's office. Mobile Notary Publics offer Notary services to those who can't or won't travel to a Notary's office and are usually in high demand.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Notary commission
  • Notary stamp
  • Notary logbook
  • Means of travel
  1. Step 1

Apply for a commission. To learn how to become a Notary Public in your state, go to the National Notary Association website, click on "Become a Notary" and click on your state.

  2. Step 2

Purchase Notary supplies. You need a notary stamp and a logbook. Both are available at major office supply stores, although you might need to special order them. You can also order your supplies online.

  3. Step 3

Promote yourself. Emphasize that you're mobile. Place an ad in the local phone book, create a website and advertise online. Connect with local businesses like real estate agents, doctors, attorneys and office supply stores that may need a Notary. Distribute business cards or brochures freely.

  4. Step 4

Prepare to travel. As a Mobile Notary, you're in demand when other Notaries aren't available. You'll be called out on evenings and weekends.

  5. Step 5

Survey what other Notaries in your area charge, and set your fees in the mid-range to begin with. You must strike a balance between competitive rates to get clients and collecting enough to make a living. As a Mobile Notary, you'll charge an extra fee for travel. Some Notaries charge by distance traveled, some charge for time spent traveling, and some have one rate for travel within a certain area and another for travel beyond it.

  6. Step 6

Chase big clients like real estate brokers by establishing and maintaining contact. Visit in person, be friendly and leave business cards or a short brochure explaining your services and rates. Even if they don't need a Mobile Notary Public right now, they will one day. Stop in every 6 months or so and ask if they need more business cards. This lets you maintain a connection and stay present in their minds so that when they need a Notary, they think of you.

  7. Step 7

Persevere. It takes time to establish a broad client base and make yourself known. Give yourself time to succeed.

Tips & Warnings
  • You must have a broad client base to succeed as a Notary. Always look out for potential new clients.

on 2/1/2009 This is great information. Also, I would suggest attending networking events. Ask for referrals as well. These could be the way to maintain a great client base. As a mobile notary there are plenty of other avenues to earn income as well. I have some suggestions at my link.
