Poi is the Maori form of juggling. It takes skill and practice, but this art form is beautiful to watch. It usually consists of two balls on a cord. Once the perform becomes advanced, the balls may be lit on fire, or the performer may use other things to highlight the movement.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Set of poi balls
  1. Step 1

Measure the poi balls so that the cord is the correct length for your body. The cord should stretch from your shoulders to your wrist.

  2. Step 2

Face your palms down and swing the balls forward. This is the basic forward swing. Try doing one arm and then the other. Then try spinning with both hands at the same time.

  3. Step 3

Swing the balls backward with your palms facing up. Try swinging one ball and then the other. Once you have mastered this, try swinging your arms together. You may also try to do this with your palms facing forward. This is a backward swing.

  4. Step 4

Try the butterfly move by swinging the balls in toward each other, and bringing your hands together. Keep your palms facing down or away from your body. Try a giant butterfly by moving the hands away from each other at the bottom of the swing. Then bring the hands together above the head, and move down to normal spinning height.

  5. Step 5

Spin the poi forward. Rotate your body at 90-degree angles, allowing your arms to cross. The poi should remain parallel as they rotate to one side and then the other. Your hands will shift with your body. These are hip reels.
