It can be much less expensive to buy computers at auction than to buy them from a retail store. However, there is a higher chance of buying problem computers when they come from an auction. There are several things that buyers can do, however, before they buy at auction to make sure the computers they buy are worth the price they pay.

Buying Computers at Online Auctions

Step1
Find an online auction site that has some type of guarantee on the products. If there is no seller protection available, look for individual sellers that offer a guarantee or insurance on the product. If you buy from an auction, you will likely not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Sign up for the site from which you want to buy the computer.
Step2
Research the model of computer you want before you search for an individual computer. Going for the cheapest or the fanciest may not get you what you want.
Step3
Bid on the online auction you want to buy. Ask the seller any questions you have about the computer before you bid, as online bids are binding contracts. Make sure you understand what you are buying, what comes with it and what type of guarantee you will have on it.

Buying Computers at Physical Auctions

Step1
Sign up for a newsletter for physical auction houses. These will advertise what items are coming up in the next auctions. This allows potential buyers to visit the items in advance and to check them out.
Step2
Visit the computers and plug them in. Make sure they are in working order and have the components that you need. Ask any questions about the computers while you are there as there will likely not be an opportunity for questions once the auction starts.
Step3
Make your bid on the items. Make sure you understand the payment terms before bidding. Some auctions don't take checks, while some don't take anything but cash. You also have to factor in a fee that is levied by the auction house. This amount will be in addition to your winning bid.
