How to Use GPS to Track the Elderly
If you have an elderly loved one who frequently wanders off, a global positioning system (GPS) might be able to help. GPS can track an individual or object from hundreds of miles away. For those elderly family members it's as simple as installing some software and deciding where to place the unit.

1
Install a GPS unit on the individual's car if he's currently still driving. This allows you not only to see where he's going and how to get there, but also to find him if he gets lost.
-
2
Look for a cell phone that comes complete with GPS programs such as those available from Verizon, Sprint and AT&T. These cell phones allow the company to track the phones, so many people use them for children or elderly family members.

3
Purchase a walker with that comes equipped with GPS. These walkers allow the user to see where she's going, but they also keep track of her in case she wanders off or becomes lost.
-
4
Invest in the uLocate Communications program. This program allows users to upload tracking software directly onto a number of different cell phones to keep track of those loved ones who wander off.
-
5
Attach a child locater, such as those available from Brickhouse Security, to your elderly loved one. These devices are small enough to attach to a shoelace, yet allow users to keep track of their loved ones wherever they may be.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure the GPS system allows you or the company to track the individual. Some units, especially those designed for vehicles, allow only the user to access the information.
Keep track of those elderly family members by looking at their GPS history to see where they venture everyday. When they do become lost or wander off, you'll know where to look for them.

My 2 cents. I installed a free version of GuardianWare BlackBerry on my BlackBerry. Whenever my mother goes outside alone, I will give it to her. I can check where she is even if she does not hear the rings and can not answer my call.
