Pitching a backpacking tent is a little different from pitching the other car-camping tent varieties. More than likely, you are pitching it in the middle of the woods or on a mountain. Backpacking tents are generally more lightweight and simple to put together.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tent
  1. Step 1

Look for a flat area below the tree line, preferably clear of rocks and tree stumps or branches under the dirt. Clear stones or sticks and make the surface as level as possible.

  2. Step 2

Lay out tent and poles depending on the design of the backpacking tent. Place heavy objects on tent corners to act as weights.

  3. Step 3

Secure the tent from the wind. Pitch tent entryway aligned with the wind direction to increase ventilation and protect you and the tent from inclement weather.

  4. Step 4

Set up the windward side of the tent first. Work quickly to avoid winds. Clip together all necessary clips to ensure a stable structure.

  5. Step 5

Anchor tent corners to the ground with stakes or pegs. Anticipate weather conditions and be prepared for the worst. Dig drainage moats if heavy rains are expected.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a footprint, or ground tarp, to protect the bottom of the tent and alleviate ground moisture from getting inside the tent.
  • If you can't find the ideal surface (not too hard, not too soft), improvise and use other methods, such as tying tent to nearby branches, to secure your tent.
