How to Access Gmail With Mozilla Thunderbird

Gmail is a web based email service provided by Google that uses POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) and IMAP4 (Internet Message Access Protocol) to retrieve email. Gmail is known for it's generous amount of free storage. If you prefer to use Mozilla's Thunderbird email program you can access your Gmail account with Thunderbird by adding your Gmail account to Thunderbird.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open the Mozilla Thunderbird email program.

  2. Step 2

    In "Security" select "SSL." Enable the "Check for New Messages at Start-up" and the "Automatically Download New Messages" functions if you want Thunderbird to automatically check for new email in those ways.

  3. Step 3

    Click "Tools" and select "Account Settings."

  4. Step 4

    Click the button labeled "Add Account." Select "Email Account" and click "Next."

  5. Step 5

    Enter your name in the field entitled "Your Name." Type your Gmail address in the field labeled "Email Address" and click "Next."

  6. Step 6

    Designate the account type as "POP" and click "Next." Enter "pop.gmail.com" in the field labeled "Incoming Server." Enter your Gmail address in the "Incoming User Name" field. Enter your Gmail address again in the "Outgoing User Name" field and click "Next."

  7. Step 7

    Designate a name for your Gmail account in the "Account Name" field, such "Gmail" or "My Gmail." Click "Next" and then click "Finish."

  8. Step 8

    Go to "Account Settings" and locate your Gmail account, designated with whatever name you assigned to it in Step 7.

  9. Step 9

    Choose "Server Settings" from the list of folders located below the new Gmail account listing. Set the "Port" designation to 995.
