Things You'll Need:
- Mask
- Snorkel
- Flippers
- Wet suit

Step 1
Choose a mask that is easy to clean and fits properly on your child's head. Always have the child try on the mask to ensure there is a tight seal around the eyes so water does not leak in while the mask is submerged. Do not always go by the age limitations on packaging. Just because a mask says it is for ages seven through nine doesn't mean that it will perfectly fit your eight-year-old.

Step 2
Purchase a snorkel small enough to fit securely in your child's mouth. Be certain that he can bite down on the rubber knobs on the mouthpieces. This helps keep the snorkel in place so water does not enter his mouth.
-
Step 3
Find a wet suit that fits snugly around the legs, arms and neck. A snug seal ensures that water does not enter the suit and that your child stays warm. This means that she can stay in the water for longer periods of time.
-
Step 4
Use adjustable flippers for your child. Children grow rapidly, and purchasing adjustable flippers will allow you to get the perfect fit for several years. Check to see that the heel is securely in the flipper and that your child can gently kick in the water without the flipper cutting off circulation or falling off.
-
Step 5
Equip your child with a properly fitting life vest. A life jacket not only allows children to float easily on top of the water if they are not good swimmers, but it also keeps them safe.
