When choosing the perfect wedding cake, it is usually about the look and design of the cake, but much of what goes into designing a cake is the icing. Choose wedding cake icing with care and knowledge, and you can have the perfect wedding cake made to suit your wishes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go with the most common icing for simple a simple wedding cake. If you have an idea for a wedding cake with limited decoration, then you would do well to go with a buttercream icing. It is light and fluffy and can be made in stark white or cream colors.

  2. Step 2

Choose fondant for wedding cake icing when you have a complex idea. Fondant is a sugary syrup that is formed into a hard paste, and so it can be formed to lay over the top of your wedding cake and can be decorated in many ways. This is usually an icing that is a feast for the eyes only, as it is not particularly tasty.

  3. Step 3

Think about marzipan. It is a centuries old baker's treat that is wonderful for filling and covering cakes. It can be molded to decorate your wedding cake and has a wonderful almond taste.

  4. Step 4

Ask your baker about sugar gum paste. It is a lot like fondant, as it can be formed to harden on the cake and it can be molded to make many decorative touches on your wedding cake. A sugar and gum paste is not always the tastiest wedding cake icing, but if you want an intricate design this may be a good one to choose.

  5. Step 5

Do it yourself with cake decorator's icing or Royal icing. These are the easiest for amateurs as they are fluffy and tasty as well as easily spread onto the cake. For the do it yourself kind of bride, choose these icings and make your own wedding cake creation at home.
