How to Use LimeWire With Vista and the McAfee Security Suite

LimeWire is person-to-person file sharing software. Because LimeWire downloads directly to your PC it may not work with the Vista Firewall and McAfee Security Suite. Changing a few setting can make it run like a top. Read on to learn how to use LimeWire with Vista and the McAfee Security Suite.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Click on "Advanced" in the Tools menu, under "Options." This opens a small window with available settings.

  2. Step 2

    Click on "Firewall Configuration" from the right side of the window. Pick "Manual Port Forward." Write down the port number you see there. Click on "Apply" and select "OK." Close LimeWire.

  3. Step 3

    Click on "Network Setting" from the computer's Control Panel. Select the "Firewall" link on the left side of the window.

  4. Step 4

    Choose the "Advanced" button. Review the programs that are allow through the "Firewall." If LimeWire is not selected, check the box beside it. Click "Apply" and "OK."

  5. Step 5

    Open McAfee. Click on the icon or go to program files in the Start menu. Click on "Internet and Network."

  6. Step 6

    Pick the "Configure" option on the screen. Choose the "Advanced" tab under "Firewall" and then "Select System Services." Select "Add to Open a Port" and a new window pops up.

  7. Step 7

    Enter the program name as "Lime." Leave the category blank. Enter the port number into the descriptions. Leave the descriptions blank. Click "OK."

  8. Step 8

    Close McAfee and reboot the computer. Open LimeWire to see if it works.
