Paper flight darts, patented in 1898, utilize paper fins (instead of feathers, nylon or plastic) to stabilize the dart and lower air resistance while the dart is in flight. Eraser darts use the same principal by combining paper (the flight), an eraser (the barrel) and a sewing pin (the tip and flight shaft) for lightweight, micro-scale dart game play. Follow these steps to create your own paper flight eraser darts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New pencils
  • Paper
  • Craft knife
  • Paper cutter
  • Sewing pins
  • Tape
  1. Step 1

Decide how you want your darts to look (colors) and the number of darts you wish to make before purchasing paper and pencils. Also, keep in mind that some craft and office supply stores sell erasers (for "refillable" pencils) separately in a bag.

  2. Step 2

Remove the erasers from your pencils if you did not find bagged erasers. Use the tip of your craft knife to "pop" them from their housing and set them aside.

  3. Step 3

Cut out a square (2 and 1/4th inches in size) from your paper. Use the ruler on a paper cutter to measure and cut to size.

  4. Step 4

Fold one corner of the square to its opposite to make a triangle. Press firmly along the fold, unfold and then repeat with the opposite corners. Unfold the triangle, half-fold the now square form horizontally, press firmly along the fold, unfold and repeat the half-fold along the vertical and then unfold once more.

  5. Step 5

Bend the paper inward along the top and bottom vertical lines and the right and left horizontal lines to make your four-winged flight.

  6. Step 6

Poke a 1 and 1/2 inch sewing pin through the center of the flight from the inside. This may cause your flight to unfold--if so, refold the flight around the head of the pin.

  7. Step 7

Hold the flight at its base (where the sewing pinhead sits) with you dominant hand, hold an eraser with your opposite hand and slowly push the pin through the eraser lengthwise end-to-end until one end of the eraser sits snugly against the center of the flight. To finish your eraser dart and make it aerodynamic, close each wing opening with a 2/16th inch piece of tape.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never treat eraser darts like toys or throw them at people as the sharp point of the pin can inflict permanent eye or other physical damage.
