Step 1
Stop pedaling. When the chain comes off the chain ring, the first thing to do is stop the pedaling motion. If it is continued, there is a chance the chain will become jammed enough that stopping will be necessary.
-
Step 2
Shift to the lowest gear. In the case that the chain fell off and is going to go back, it will jump back onto the cog at the lowest gear setting. Even though usually shifting without pedaling is not advisable, in this case it is necessary.
-
Step 3
Pedal gently. Don't put too much pressure on the pedals as you begin pedaling. The chain will shake loose if it's going to, but pedaling hard will just make it jam harder, becoming impossible to get loose without getting off the bike.
-
Step 4
Look for signs of trouble. If the pedals are stuck, the bike is making loud noises or the chain doesn't jump back on after a few full rounds, stopping to put the chain back on is necessary.
-
Step 5
Watch where you're going. Never ride while looking at your feet or your cogs and chain. Stop if there's a problem that can't be fixed while moving. Riding a bicycle requires being alert and attentive to the environment, and if that's not possible, pull over until it is safer.
