1
Start by cutting the string in a 6 foot long measurement. Make a loop and tie the ends together. You can make the string shorter or longer to fit your preference.
-
2
Open the loop. The string should be looped around your pinkie fingers and thumbs. Pull the string tight.

3
Use this common opening for most string figures. Take the right index finger and pick up the opposing string. Repeat on the other side. Tighten and spread apart.

4
Make a simple cup and saucer. Do the opening described above. Pick up the strings closest to the index fingers on both sides with your thumbs. Now use the other hand to remove the bottom string from both thumbs. Be careful to leave the upper noose strings in the original position. Now release the string from the pinkie fingers and hold thumbs spread apart from the fingers and up.

String a star from the cup and saucer. Double the string first so it's short enough. Move your hands so the fingers are pointing up instead of the thumbs. Pick up the straight string on top with your pinkie fingers. Release the strings on your thumbs and pick up the little strings nearest to you. Now release the right pinkie finger from the string. Pull apart. The left pinkie finger should make the tip of the star.
