You can create a form of hip hop music by screwing, or slowing down, and chopping, or skipping back and forth between the beats of your music. You can do this live on a turn table or create it in a music software program. Read on to learn how to screw and chop music.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Two records (can be the same or different)
  • Two turntables with a crossfade switch
  • Music editing software
  • Computer

Step1
Screw your music by slowing down the vocals of the song. Choose particular phrases that you want to slow down and adjust the speed of your turntable during those phrases. You can also slow down or speed up the turntable by pushing lightly on the record.
Step2
Chop your music by playing two different records at the same time. If you are playing the same record you want one to be a beat or two behind the other one. Switch back and forth between records with a crossfade switch to chop. You can repeat beats or skip beats doing this.
Step3
Practice doing this at home, before you perform in public, so that you can get the phrasing in the right spots.
Step4
Edit the music on your computer. Select the songs you want to edit.
Step5
Use the time code bar to select the section of song you want to play. To screw the song, slow down the speed that you want the music to play.
Step6
Switch back and forth between two different songs or have short phrases repeat in the same song to chop the song with the computer software.
