Skating with rollerblades is a great way to have fun while exercising. With so many different kinds of skating from which to choose, including aggressive, recreational and speed, it's no wonder that rollerblades have become so popular. Before you can tackle the slalom course or the skate park, however, you need to learn how to push off with your rollerblades.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Strap into your rollerblades and stand up. If you need help getting up onto your skates, don't be afraid to ask--other skaters are usually glad to help.

  2. Step 2

Steady yourself and find your center of balance before pushing off. Try to lock your balance in and remember what it feels like to stand comfortably over your skates.

  3. Step 3

Decide which leg you're going to push off with. Most people like to push off with their weaker leg so that their strong leg takes the first stride forward.

  4. Step 4

Turn your foot out to the side so that the inside of your rollerblade faces forward. It's OK if you can't turn your foot complete to the side--just angle it out as much as you can.

  5. Step 5

Push the wheels into the ground and shove yourself forward on your other skate. Remember to let your center of gravity move forward with your front leg, or you'll end up doing a split and falling over.

  6. Step 6

Bring your rear leg back in line with your front leg after you've pushed off. Again, stay centered over your front leg or you'll lose your balance.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Steps 4 through 6 to build more speed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't rollerblade without wearing a helmet and pads.
