1
Clean out the mesh bags made of plastic that holds nuts, fruit and other such items as you make a washing machine lint filter. Make sure you clean this bag thoroughly so that no mold will appear over time.
-
2
Remove any material from the plastic mesh bag that is not plastic, such as any thread, the paper label, or anything else. If you fail to do this, as you make a washing machine lint filter, you run the risk of these materials molding.

3
Seal one end of the bag by weaving a twist-tie, dental floss, or wire in and out of the holes in the mesh bag at ½ inch intervals. Gather the mesh bag tightly together with the twist-tie or whatever you used, then secure it tightly as you make a washing machine lint filter.
-
4
Do the same with the other end of the bag as you did in the above step, but this time do not tightly gather the end until after you slip it over the end of the washing machine's tube.
-
5
Insert the tube of the washing machine into the drain, but make sure it is not placed too far down the pipe to block the drain.
-
6
Change the washing machine lint filter you made every two years.
