How to Make a Vanilla Bean Milkshake

The milkshake is as American as apple pie. Some purists prefer a vanilla bean milkshake to a standard vanilla milkshake. The difference seems small, but to the aficionado, actually having a bit of vanilla bean in the milkshake makes a world of difference. Here's how to make a vanilla bean milkshake.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vanilla bean ice cream
  • Milk (skim to whole)
  • Vanilla extract
  • Hand mixer or blender
  1. Step 1

Place several scoops of vanilla bean ice cream into a blender or large glass. The general rule of thumb is three scoops per milkshake you are attempting to make.

  2. Step 2

Add a healthy pour of milk to the blender or large glass. The milk is going to thin the ice cream and make it a shake versus a scoop of ice cream. A little milk goes a long way. One-half cup per three scoops is plenty.

  3. Step 3

Inject just a dash of vanilla extract into the mixture for an enhanced vanilla flavor. (Remember that vanilla extract has alcohol. Skip this step if serving to kids. Because the vanilla will not burn off during a cooking process, the drink will have a minimal alcohol content.)

  4. Step 4

Blend or combine with a hand mixer until the vanilla bean milkshake is thick and frothy. This should happen fairly quickly; after 20 seconds you'll have a great milkshake that is ready to serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • To make this a chocolate milkshake, simply add a healthy squirt of chocolate syrup before you blend it. You'll have smooth chocolately goodness in no time.
