You just got hit with the infamous CD disc read error on your PlayStation 2 or it has started happening more often. Buying a new PlayStation 2 isn't the only option you have, and there are a few tricks you can try to repair the system without even opening it up. Read on to learn how to fix the disk read error on PlayStation 2 without taking it apart.

From Quick Guide: Playstation 2 Gaming
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean your discs with a scratch-free cloth in a motion from the inside of the disc out. This allows the CD laser to remain focused and track properly.

  2. Step 2

Start the PS2 without a disc and wait for the menu to appear. Press the "Triangle" and select "Console." Push "Triangle" and set diagnostic to "On." This is the preferred method of Sony support however if it fixes the error you have to place the console into diagnostic mode each time you play.

  3. Step 3

Turn the system to a vertical position using the base for support if you have one. The Sony CD drives often work best in the upright position and you will find better and faster tracking on your system.

  4. Step 4

Balance the disc by placing two 1-inch pieces of transparent tape on top of the disc as close to the center hole as possible. This allows the balancing mechanism to work properly. If two pieces of tape fail to work, add two more pieces of tape to correct the error.

  5. Step 5

Vacuum the front and rear vents as well as the CD bay door. The PlayStation 2 collects a lot of dust that can scatter the light from the laser causing it to lose focus.
