- Two contrasting fabrics

Step 1
Cut out of paper one triangle with a base of 4 1/4 inches and the legs being 3 inches. Cut out a rectangle that measures 5 inches by 2 1/2 inches. On one of the long sides of the rectangle measure 2 1/2 inches in from the edge. Cut from there to the corner on the bottom of the opposite side.

Choose two fabrics to compliment each other. For example, choose a blue print with a coordinating blue solid. You can also use two contrasting prints.

Lay one of the rectangle pieces on the table. Place the contrasting triangle on top of the longer cut side of the rectangle with the right sides together. Make sure the base of the triangle is opposite the seam that you want to sew. Stitch the two pieces together and repeat this step four times.

Step 4
Test your design by arranging your first four sets into a block on the table, before sewing them together. It's a good idea to sew one whole block together at first to see how the pieces fit together and to make sure you get the correct placement of the blocks. Sew these sets together to make one block.

Step 5
Sew four sets together for as many blocks as you need. The number of blocks you make depends on both the size of your blocks and the size of your quilt.

Step 6
Join the blocks together in rows. Then, sew the rows together to make your quilt top.
