Step 1
Open a digital photograph. To do this, click "File" and then "Open." Use the rectangular marquee tool to make a selection by drawing a box around the desired part of the photograph.

Go to "Image" and then "Crop." Adobe Photoshop removes anything outside the selected area.

Utilize the pen tool to remove the background. Draw a box around the shape you want to keep. You are creating the shape of the new brush.

Select "Make Selection" in the path palette (a small pop-up palette). Your image will now have a selection or dotted line around it.

Click "Edit" and "Cut" to have Adobe Photoshop remove the part of the image you don't want. Paste it back by selecting "Edit" and then "Paste." The image now appears in a new layer.

Step 6
Remove the background image by clicking on the eye in the layers palette. This tool turns the visibility of your layers on and off. With the background turned off, only the image shows up.

Step 7
Save the brush by going to the "Save Brush" command.
