How to Build a Jet Engine

If you can build one, a jet engine is an exciting and magnificent examples of your mechanical prowess and grasp of the higher sciences. Become the envy of everyone on your block. Zip down straight roads within nanoseconds, the wind whipping about you while you pass those posers on motorcycles who wish they were as cool as you. All you need to do is build one.

Things You'll Need

  • Turbo charger
  • 2-inch pipe and fittings
  • 1 1/4-inch steel conduit
  • High-pressure hose
  • Ignition system
  • Drill

Instructions

    • 1

Machine the parts to allow for smooth fits if necessary. You can loosely fit them together to make sure that they aren't going to fall apart easily and that the parts are going to snugly stay in place.

    • 2

Drill a hole into the combustion chamber for the ignition system's spark. Make sure that there isn't more space than necessary, as it's possible for the flame to shoot out of the area and cause damage and injury.

    • 3

Drill another hole into the flame holder if you're using an electrical ignition method in order to create an arc through the combustion chamber.

    • 4

Perforate the flame tube so that you can optimize turbulence through it. This allows a faster output of flame and help make a really cool noise.

    • 5

Test your jet engine by setting up an air supply through the hose, injecting fuel into the main chamber and positioning your ignition system so that it will send a spark into the ignition chamber using the hole you drilled. Start the ignition and keep a steady feed of both fuel and air for as long as it takes to satisfy you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure your workspace is well-ventilated and comfortable for you to work in.

  • Don't relax safety at any time around jet engines. Like internal combustion engines, they utilize controlled explosions, which are not to be ignored as a potential source of injury. Observe all safety measures at all times while building or operating a jet engine.
