How to Buy a Ristra

A ristra is a cluster of three dried chili pepper strings commonly seen in New Mexico. Their main purpose is to preserve chili after a summer harvest. An old southwest legend says that a decorative ristra hanging in a home's doorway brings good fortune.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you want an edible or decorative ristra. A lacquered ristra isn't edible

    • 2

Consider the different kind of chiles merchants use to make ristras. Sandia, or large, chiles are 4 to 8 inches long. Their color is deep burgundy, and the chiles can be mild to hot. Piquin chiles are thin and 1 to 2 inches long. Their color is bright red, and the chiles are very hot.

    • 3

Select a ristra that's the right size and style for your home. Merchants sell ristras ranging from 6 inches to 3 feet long. You can find many different styles, including wreaths and heart-shaped ristras. You have the option to have the merchant custom make a ristra for your home.

    • 4

Buy an affordable ristra. Prices vary according to size and decoration. You can expect to spend less money for a small, simple ristra. The larger, more decorative ristras are more expensive.

    • 5

Purchase a ristra from one of your favorite New Mexico chile merchants. New Mexico destinations include Santa Fe, Hatch, Albuquerque and Las Cruces. Go to the New Mexico Tourism department's website for more information about visiting. If you don't want to travel, buy a ristra online from websites like Chile Traditions, iShopSouthwest or Made in New Mexico.

    • 6

Open the package with the ristra right away. Chile peppers may fall off during shipping. Hang the strings to dry.
