Step 1
Prepare a complete list of all of the items you'll need for the weekend. Include food, drinks, an appropriately sized cooler, navigational aides, and the proper equipment for your canoe. Be sure to include a cell phone at the top of your list.
-
Step 2
Pack all of your items in waterproof containers that can be completely sealed. Use a large dry bag for your clothing, sleeping bag and non-perishable food. Choose smaller seat packs, which fasten to the seat braces of your canoe, for essential items that you need to access quickly.
-
Step 3
Outfit your canoe with the proper equipment. Be sure that your paddles are the correct size and shape for the type of canoe trip you are taking. Include life vests or jackets for everyone in the canoe.
-
Step 4
Secure the cooler in the middle of the canoe between the center rungs. Tie the cooler down with bungee cords or ropes. Face the cooler toward the stern of the canoe to make the canoe easier to steer. Fasten the lid of the cooler tightly in case the canoe tips over.
-
Step 5
Keep all of your gear within the sides of the canoe. The canoe is more likely to tip if the equipment extends beyond the sides of the canoe. It's also more likely to catch on low tree branches as you navigate a narrow passageway of water.
-
Step 6
Bring a cushion to sit on. If you do not have one, use your life vest as a cushion. Fasten the cushion securely to the seat of your canoe.
