A Witch's Circle is a sacred area in which to pray, cast spells or perform rituals. It is thought to be a protective barrier between the energies one works with and the witch themselves. For some, it serves as a focal point for the energies raised during a ritual, to help better direct them to their goal.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5 candles, each inscribed with an elemental symbol
  • Athame (ceremonial knife)
  • Besom (ritual broom)
  1. Step 1

Prepare the area that you have chosen by sweeping it clean with the Besom. This is thought to remove any residual negative energies from the area before you begin.

  2. Step 2

Transcribe a circle 9 feet in diameter by visualizing energy being directed out from your person through the blade of the Athame. Walk clockwise (this is called Doesil) as you direct the energy, until you cross the point where you started. You should have a clear idea of where on the ground the boundary is.

  3. Step 3

Use the same visualization method as before to direct energy as you lay out a five-pointed star. The edge of each leg of the star should just barely touch the original circle, but not cross outside of it.

  4. Step 4

Place one candle at each point of the star. Starting with the top point (the one facing your Altar if you are using one) and moving clockwise, the order is Spirit, Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

  5. Step 5

Light each candle in the order described in Step 4. Many traditions perform small chants or prayers as they do this. Your circle is now Open.
