How to Pump Fuel in Your Vehicle

  1. Step 1

Look to see where your gas tank is located on your vehicle. Normal places are on the left or right side of the car. Figuring this out at first will make sure that you do not pull into the wrong lane at the gas station.

  2. Step 2

Pull into the correct lane and do not pull too far up or back. Try to line up the pump next to the tank, otherwise you may find yourself having to move your car to get the hose to reach.

  3. Step 3

Open up the fuel tank door and unscrew the gas cap. Usually the cap has something that connects it to the frame of the tank, if it does not then remove it and remember where you placed it.

  4. Step 4

Pay the attendant or scan your credit card to pay for your gas.

  5. Step 5

Remove and Insert the nozzle all the way in to the tank and pull the lever to start pumping on the handle. Sometimes you may need to flip the lever on the actual gas unit to activate the pumping.

  6. Step 6

Once you are done pumping, let the nozzle sit for a few seconds to let any excess fuel drip out. Remove and replace the nozzle into the fueling unit.

  7. Step 7

Screw the gas cap back on and close the fuel door. If you placed the cap some where be sure to retrieve it and put it back on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some gas tanks are behind the license plate of the rear of the car. Later model vehicles sometimes have this.
  • Lock all doors while pumping gas or leaving your vehicle to pay the attendant, this will help prevent any surprise visitors.
  • Be sure to have the key handy should you have to gas up and have a locking gas cap. Carrying a spare gas cap key in the vehicle is also advisable.
  • Do not use the lever on the handle that you can use to prop the pump to pump on its own, sometimes there may be a recoil that causes the nozzle to push itself out of the tank and cause gas to fly every where.
