Rabbits are sociable creatures, but like their human counterparts, there are often times when they, too, need to just relax in their own space. Rabbit owners often build their bunnies spacious condos. Even if your rabbit has free run of the house, you may still want to build him a comfortable rabbit condo, where he can relax or get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wire frames/creative cubes
  • Cable ties
  • Scissors
  • Flooring material (laminate, outdoor carpet, or wood)
  • Binder Clips
  • Outdoor carpet glue
  • Thick cardboard
  • Smooth wood boards

How to Build a Rabbit Condo

Step1
Decide the size of the condo you are going to build. Will you build a multi-leveled condo or a simple one story condo? The most common dimensions of rabbit condos are three frames tall, three frames wide, and two frames deep. However, you can make the condo as big as you would like.
Step2
Gather the materials. Because building a rabbit condo is a time-consuming process, you can make it much easier by gathering all of the materials you need ahead of time. You'll also want to build the condo in the room in which you're going to keep it because moving it will be too difficult once it is complete.
Step3
Start putting the condo together on your flooring material. Most people use laminate flooring, outdoor carpet, or wood for the rabbit condo's floor. Take out your wire frames or creative cubes and lay them down to build the foundation of the condo. Build your first row, then begin to add wire frames to your preferred height. Do not add wire frames to the front of the condo until you've added your levels.
Step4
Add levels or shelves to your rabbit condo. You may want to add a small L-shaped level to create the second floor of the rabbit condo then add a longer shelf to create the top floor. The easiest way to add shelves is to use your wire frames, fastening them to the walls of the condo with cable ties. Then secure a piece of cardboard to the shelf using cable ties. You may also want to fasten outdoor carpet to the shelf, so your rabbit will be comfortable lying down.
Step5
Add ramps. While your rabbit may opt to jump to the first level of her rabbit condo, adding a ramp is a good idea for older bunnies, who can then climb to each level. Simply slant a piece of wood at an angle with a piece of outdoor carpet fastened to the wood with outdoor glue to create your ramp.
Step6
Finish adding the wire frames to form the front of the condo. Most wire frames come with connectors, making it easy to build the condo. Be sure that the connectors are tightly secured, or else your condo's walls could be unstable. Secure cable ties to your frames for extra stability. Remember to designate frames that will serve as your rabbit condo's door. When you want to shut the condo door, simply fasten it with a binder clip.
Step7
Build the roof using either wire frames or even a piece of wood.
Step8
Add your rabbit's litter box, hay, a food and water dish, and toys, such as toilet paper rolls and phone books to chew, then open the door and let your rabbit wander in and explore when he's ready.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can be as creative as you want when building your rabbit's condo. Some people opt to put wheels on the condo, for example, making it easy to move.
  • The best time of the year to find wire frames, or creative cubes, is when school starts. College students often use creative cubes for shelving while rabbit owners use them for their rabbit condos.
  • The connectors that come with creative cubes are often difficult to work with, so it's important to use cable ties to support those connectors. Some people use only cable ties to put the condo together, but securely adding the connectors allows the condo to become more stable. Working with connectors requires plenty of patience.
