How to Make a Tuberose Lei

The Tuberose flower is white in color with a beautiful fragrance. When made into a lei, it is not only a sight to see, but it's fragrance can be smelled from 5 to 10 feet away. This lei is usually given to visitors at various Hawaii Airports and between Hawaiians at various celebrations. Learn how to make this beautiful lei in a few easy steps.

  • 6 inch lei needle
  • 6 feet of white thread
  • 40 Tuberose flowers

Instructions

    • 1

      Place the thread through the eye of the needle. Match up the ends of the thread and hold them together. With the other hand, pull the needle down to the middle. There should be 3 feet of thread on each side.

      Hold the ends together approximately 3 inches from the end. Tie a knot at that point with the two ends of the thread sticking out of the knot.

      Choose one Tuberose flower and hold it straight up by the stem with the petals facing up. Place the point of the needle underneath the bottom of the stem. Push the needle into the bottom of the stem and through the center of the stem and flower.

      Pull the needle completely through the entire flower leaving the flower on the thread only. Pull the flower by the stem gently down to the knot at the end of the thread.

      Reeat Steps 4 and 5 until their is 3 to 4 inches of thread left. Tie the ends of the lei together.

Tips & Warnings

  • A bow made out of ribbon can be tied where the ends of the thread meet to accentuate the lei.
