How to Make a Carnation Lei

The carnation lei is very popular at graduation ceremonies in Hawaii. This lei can be worn by men or women and is made in a variety of colors. Learn how to make this beautiful lei in just a few easy steps.

  • 6 inch lei needle
  • 6 feet of white thread
  • 60 medium size carnation flowers

Instructions

  1. Make a Lei

    • 1

      Match up the ends of the thread. Place one end of the thread through the eye of the needle and pull the needle down to the center of the thread. There should be three feet of thread on each side of the needle.

      Hold the ends of the thread together with the thumb and index finger three inches from the end. With the other thumb and index fingers, grab the ends and tie them in a knot.

      Select one carnation. Hold the bottom of the flower with the thumb and index finger. The petals should be facing up. Place the needle underneath the flower and push it into the bottom center of the flower.

      Continue to push the needle completely through the center of the petals. Hold the bottom of the flower and gently pull it down to the end of the thread.

      Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the thread is covered with flowers and approximately three inches of thread is left. Tie the ends of the thread together.

Tips & Warnings

  • To accentuate the lei, a bow made of ribbon can be tied onto the lei where the ends of the thread meet.
