How To Organize a Pick Up Basketball Game

  1. Step 1

Call your friends. Ideally you'd like a five-on-five game, so you should try and get nine other players. Four-on-four is also fun. Unless you know certain players will need a rest after a game or two, it's best to have an even number of players.

  2. Step 2

Decide on a court. Do you want to play indoors or outdoors? For most people, getting access to an outdoor court is far easier, so that's probably your best bet. Besides, if you only get a few of your friends, there's a chance other players will already be at the court so you can join with them to make a full game.

  3. Step 3

Choose a time to meet at the court. It should be a time that works for everyone, and also allows for at least a couple hours of playing. Depending on the stamina of the players, you can play anywhere from one to five (or more) games.

  4. Step 4

Make rules. Are you going to play full court or half court? Up to twenty one or fifteen? Switch sides or no? It's best to agree on the rules before you start the game so there are no arguments. Once you do this, you're almost ready to begin playing.

  5. Step 5

Now it's time to make teams. There are a few ways to do this. You could choose two captains (usually two players who are at about the same skill level) and have them pick their own team. You could shoot free throws and the first five players to make it would be on the same team. As long as the teams are reasonably balanced, that's all that matters.

  6. Step 6

Play ball! It's time to begin playing pick up basketball. If someone has to leave, just pick up another player to replace him. Play as many games as you like!

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring plenty of water, especially if you're playing outdoors on a hot day. You don't want to get dehydrated.
