How to Get a Job as a Nanny

  1. Step 1

Become CPR and First Aid Certified. The American Red Cross website can give you contact information on who to call to find when the next CPR and First Aid class is. Many parents will want their Nanny to be certified and will require you to take a class after you're hired if you haven't done so already.

  2. Step 2

Ask your previous supervisors if you can use them as a reference. A good number to have is three childcare references. If you've babysat for families in the past or worked in a daycare you should use them as a reference. Always ask a person first if you can use them as a reference so they're prepared to answer any questions if they receive a call.

  3. Step 3

Get a background check done on you. There are websites available that will ask you for a nominal fee. You can offer this to families that are looking for a nanny to save them time. Some may still want to perform their own background check. Be open to this idea since they only want to protect their children.

  4. Step 4

Search websites that have listings of families that are looking for a nanny in their area. Sign up and let other families find you in searches. Most sites won't make a Nanny looking for a job pay for this service. Craigslist also has local childcare forums where you can post an ad explaining when you're available to work and to list out your qualifications and have potential families email you.

  5. Step 5

Ask friends and family if they know of anybody that needs a Nanny. You may find a job simply by word of mouth. Summer is the best time to find a job as a Nanny since children are out of school and working parents need to find somebody to care for their children during the day.

  6. Step 6

Bring with you your background check, CPR/First Aid certificate, and childcare references on an interview. This will show a family that you're serious about the job and it will save you time in the future. Dress professionally and arrive on time. Be willing to negotiate your salary but don't agree to an amount that you can't live off of or you won't be hapy with.

Tips & Warnings
  • Start looking for Nanny jobs in March or April. Most parents will start to look during this time for the summer.
  • If meeting a family off the internet, consider meeting in a public place for your interview.
