How to Sew a Patchwork Christmas Tree Quilt Block

Christmas tree quilt blocks are easy to sew, and they’re useful for a wide variety of holiday projects. You can make the Christmas tree patchwork pieces any size you want. How much fabric you need depends on how large you want the block. Cotton or cotton blends, such as calicos, solid colors or quilter’s flannel work best for the patchwork pieces. For the tree, you may want to use plain green or a green print. The background fabric can be any contrasting color. Sew all the pieces of the block using 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Instructions

Make the Patterns for a Patchwork Christmas Tree Quilt Block

1. 

   Fold a piece of paper in half. Draw a triangle along the fold that’s broad at the bottom and pointed at the top. Use the ruler as a straight edge to make the edges even.

2. 

   Draw a second triangle on top of the first, forming a rectangle.

3. 

   Unfold the paper and cut out the first triangle. This will be the tree pattern.

4. Cut out one of the triangles that’s left in the rectangle. This will be the background pattern.

5. 

   Draw another rectangle as wide as the first triangle. Draw a smaller rectangle in the center of this rectangle to make to the trunk. Cut out the center rectangle for the tree trunk pattern. Cut out of the side rectangles for the background pattern.

Sew a Patchwork Christmas Tree Quilt Block

1. Cut two to four tree triangles from green fabric. Cut two background triangles for each green triangle.

2. Place the background triangles and the green triangle right sides together, lining up the lower edges of the background triangles with the upper edges of the green triangle.

3. Stitch the triangles together. Press the seams open, or toward the darker fabric. Sew the other green and background triangles together the same way.

4. Place two of the tree sections right sides together, lining up the lower edge of one green triangle with the pointed edge of another. Stitch the sections together along this edge, then press the seam flat. Sew any other tree sections together the same way.

5. Cut one tree trunk from green fabric and two side rectangles from background fabric. Stitch the side rectangles to the tree trunk right sides together, then press the seams flat.

6. 

   Place the tree trunk section and the bottom tree section right sides together. Stitch them together, the press the seam flat.

Tips & Warnings

• You may want to use light green for the background and dark green for the tree, or a completely different background color. Holiday fabrics such as snowflakes can also make a nice background.

• Use caution when working with scissors, irons and sewing machines.
