If you care for your flat iron properly, it will last a lot longer and perform better with even heating.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cloth
  • Petroleum jelly
Step1
Don't wrap the chord around the flat iron to store it. Though it's easy to just wrap it up and throw it in a drawer, coiling the chord can cause shortages in the iron. Instead, hang the flat iron from a towel rack or something similar to keep the chord loose and untangled.
Step2
Clean the metal surface of the two irons after every use with a damp cloth while the flat iron is still hot.
Step3
After the iron has cooled, if there is still debris from hair products on it, wipe it down with a bit of petroleum jelly and a dry towel to clean it. Continue wiping with the unused side of the towel until the iron is no longer greasy.
Step4
Turn the iron on only when you're ready to use it. Don't leave the flat iron on for an hour or more before use, this wears on the life of the flat iron.
Step5
Use the proper heat setting for your hair. Always using the highest heat setting can wear on the life of the flat iron and hinder its ability to continue to reach and sustain higher levels of heat.
