How to Use Essential Oils When Exercising

Those who enjoy sports, whether aerobics, brisk walking, or any other form of exercise know that vigorous effort can put strain on the lungs and breathing. These easy to make essential oil-based mist sprays can help improve breathing by soothing and calming the airways and breathing passages.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pure essential oils
  • Small mist spray bottle (4 fluid ounces)
  • Purified water
  1. Step 1

Choose 100 percent pure essential oils-only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100% pure." You can find them at health food stores and online. Don’t use synthetic oils as they do not have the same benefits.

  2. Step 2

Choose which formula you prefer based on what you like to smell. There are a variety of formulas. Here are two: Formula #1 uses spruce, lavender, spearmint and eucalyptus essential oils. Formula #2 uses myrtle, lemon, pine and lemongrass.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the mist spray bottle. Fill the bottle with 4 fluid ounces (or 120 ml) of purified water.

  4. Step 4

Add the oils for Formula #1. To the water, add 40 drops of spruce essential oil, 35 of lavender, 35 of spearmint and 35 of eucalyptus.

  5. Step 5

Add the oils for Formula #2. To the water, add 40 drops of myrtle essential oil, 40 of lemon, 40 of pine and 30 of lemongrass.

  6. Step 6

Cap the bottle and shake well to mix ingredients.

  7. Step 7

Spritz 2 to 3 sprays of the mist in the air above your head and inhale deeply. Use before and during exercise as needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do a test spritz away to make sure the bottle sprayer is releasing a fine mist, not a stream of liquid.
  • If you want to make a larger batch, simply increase the proportions, such as doubling or tripling the amounts. The mist spray will keep.
  • Store the mist bottle in a cool, dark place to protect the contents.
  • As the mist ages in the bottle it will grow stronger.
  • Citrus-derived essential oils, such as lemon, have about a one-year shelf life, after which their efficacy begins to fade. Other essential oils can last much longer.
  • To avoid “wear out” when sniffing multiple essential oils as you make your selection, take a short break and inhale a few deep breaths to clear your nose, and give your brain a chance to reset.
  • If you are using an asthma inhaler or medication, or are on any form of respiratory-related medication, first consult with your health care professional prior to using the essential oil mist spray.
  • Close your eyes when you’re misting the air above you to avoid eye irritation.
  • If any skin irritation occurs, stop using immediately.
  • Do not use essential oils if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant without getting professional advice.
