How to Make Your High School Baseball Team

1
Maximize your current skills. What aspects of the game are you currently strong in? Are you a good hitter? Fielder? Base Stealer? These are all areas of importance and if you can become great in any of these categories, you will increase your chances of making the team. Play to your strength.

Try out for the less glamorous positions. Almost every high school baseball player wants to pitch and play shortstop. There is little doubt that the fiercest rivalry will be at these positions. Try out for some of the less popular positions like catcher. Catchers are tough, hard nosed, and not afraid of the ball. That will rule out three fourths of the high schoolers from the start. Less competition means a better chance of making the team.

Excel at the basics of the game. Every high schooler wants to hit a home run every time up. Learn how to bunt, hit behind the runner, steal a base, and understand the game of baseball to get ahead. The coach will be looking for those little things far more than a home-run hitter.

Study harder than the next player. High school baseball is important but you have to be an excellent student. Don't let your studies slip and you will be closer to baseball success. Also, study the finer points of the game. Know all the little details such as coaching signs and signals, and when to lay down the bunt. These are very important to on-the-field success.

Begin working out before anyone else. Don't wait for the coaches to get there to begin working. Be the first one to practice and the last one to leave. Working hard will get you noticed and hopefully rewarded in the process. Any player that works hard will generally make the team at the high school level because they can grow and learn those things they might be lacking in.

Leave any excuses at the door. When you step into the world of sports, excuses are your worst enemy. Take any mistakes you make and turn them into learning experiences. This will only enhance your chances of making your high school baseball team.
